Following up from previous travels

Regular readers of my weblog may remember when I traveled to Corsica back in early-March. My goal from that trip was to check out the village of Cargese where Greeks emigrated from the Greek town of Itylos back in the 1600s, bringing their icons with them and setting up a Greek church on the island.

Well, during my travels in Greece, I decided to check out the town of Itylos, where those Greeks came from before they decided to leave for Corsica.

More info and pics after the jump...

Itylos is a small town in Mani, which is a very rocky, barren area. The town lies above a port on a hill overlooking the sea:

While walking around in the town, I stopped a couple of locals and began to ask, "Is there a plaque or something comemorating..." and they interrupted me and said, "Right, from Corsica... yes, go that way towards the plateia." I wonder if they get that question regularly. In the plateia, next to Itylos's main church, there's a plaque, erected in 1991, commemorating the people from Itylos who emigrated to Corsica and settled in Cargese:

This is difficult to see, even up close, but it's written in French and Greek.
